The Consumer Electronics Show, held each January in Las Vegas, has been back with a bang this week. One of the world’s largest technology trade shows, it has been swamping Twitter and dominating the press, overshadowing even Apple’s groundbreaking announcement about its new Mac App Store. So why all the fuss?
Well, CES helps to create real market value. The announcement of ARM’s partnership with Microsoft (and consequent dissolution of ‘Wintel’?) resulted in a 13 percent rise for the Cambridge-based company’s stock value. The show also caters not only to tech geeks but to everyday consumers. Throughout its 40+ year history, it has showcased gadgets that change the way many of us live, such as the CD player, Camcorder and Xbox, all of which debuted at CES.
This year’s focus on connectivity is demonstrated by the flurry of iPad-chasing tablets and internet-connected TVs. The question is, will these CES-exhibited technologies be changing the world again?
